The role of the heat shrink tube

Heat shrink tubes are available in a variety of materials, colors and sizes. Regardless of wire size, shrinkage requirements or environmental requirements, there are heat shrink tubes suitable for specific applications. The characteristics of heat shrink tube make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Most of the heat shrink tube has to do with wires and cables, but it can also be used with other objects.

Electrical Isolation

One of the main ways to use heat shrink tubes is to electrically insulate wires, solder joints, and terminals. Because the heat shrink tube is non-conductive, it forms a protective layer that prevents an accidental short circuit. In addition to insulating electrical connections, heat shrink tubes can also be used for maintenance. For example, wires with damaged insulation and exposed copper can be easily secured with a small length of heat shrink tube.

Avoid Damage

Heat shrink tubes are an excellent way to form a physical protective layer against wear, accidental cuts or wear in situations where moving parts have the potential to be damaged. Because the shape of heat shrink tubes can be adapted to the components around them, heat shrink tubes can be used to protect various connectors, wires, or solder joints.

Heat shrinkable tube not only prevent mechanical damage. It also provides a barrier that can keep out liquids such as water, oil or acid. Similarly, thermal shrinkage prevents the entry of dust and other unwanted small particles.

Stress Relief

Stress relief is used to remove mechanical stress on wires. This is important in applications where wires are often moved or pulled, such as in phone chargers. Without stress relief, weak wires can snap quickly. One of the easiest ways to add stress relief to a cable is to add a length of heat shrink tube around the bent portion of the wire. This causes some of the force to pass through the heat shrink tube rather than the copper wire itself. As a result, the service life of the wire will be significantly extended.
