Application of constant force spring in cable accessories

Constant force springs, also called negator springs or clock springs, are used to provide continuous tension and take up slack in heat shrink cable accessories like end caps, splices, and terminators.

Constant force spring exerts a nearly constant retractive force as it unwinds, keeping the connection tight and minimizing strain on the cables as they flex and move. This helps compensate for expansion/contraction and prevents loosening over time.

The Constant force spring is installed during application of the heat shrink tubing. It is stretched out fully before the tubing is shrunk, then the retained tension of the recoiled spring applies continuous pressure inside the tubed joint. This helps maintain a tight seal, provides excellent strain relief, and extends the life of the connection by reducing fatigue and intermittent loading on the cables. The spring compensates for small movements to minimize stress.

Proper Constant force spring selection is important based on the cable gauge, connector dimensions, anticipated movement/vibration levels, and environmental conditions. The force rating must suit the application to avoid being too weak or potentially damaging the cables.

Constant force springs are commonly used in aerospace, military, automotive, robotics, rail, and industrial wiring applications where cables are flexing and experiencing vibration or shock loads. Constant force spring provide reliable long-term performance even as materials expand/contract with temperature changes. When paired with adhesive lined heat shrink tubing, environmental sealing is enhanced.
