The difference between silicone rubber and EPDM rubber for cold shrinkable tube

2023-11-06

Cold shrink tubing is a type of electrical insulation material that has been widely used in the industry. It is an easy-to-install material that does not require any heat or flame to shrink. Instead, it is installed by simply pulling a removable plastic core. However, there are two types of cold shrink tubing in the market – silicone rubber and EPDM rubber. In this article, we will discuss the difference between these two types of cold shrink tubing.

Silicone Rubber Cold Shrink Tubing:

Silicone rubber is a highly durable material with good chemical resistance. It is an ideal choice for applications where high temperature resistance is needed. Silicone rubber cold shrink tubing is often used in areas where the temperatures are high, such as in the engine compartment of vehicles. It can also withstand exposure to oils, chemicals, and UV radiation.

EPDM Rubber Cold Shrinkable Tube:

EPDM or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber is another type of cold shrink tubing. It has good weatherability and is ideal for outdoor use. EPDM rubber is a good choice for applications where excellent electrical insulation and long-term outdoor durability are required. It can also provide resistance to ozone and ultraviolet radiation and is commonly used in areas where the temperatures are low.

Differences between Silicone Rubber and EPDM Rubber Cold Shrinkable Tube:

1. Temperature Resistance: As mentioned earlier, silicone rubber tubing offers better high-temperature resistance compared to EPDM rubber. Depending on the manufacturer, silicone rubber can withstand temperatures up to 260°C, whereas EPDM rubber can withstand temperatures only up to 150°C.

2. Chemical Resistance: Silicone rubber can withstand exposure to oils, chemicals, and UV radiation. It is commonly used in applications where chemical resistance is a must. On the other hand, EPDM rubber is resistant to ozone and ultraviolet radiation, making it the ideal choice for outdoor applications.

3. Durability: Silicone rubber is a highly durable material with excellent mechanical properties. It can withstand exposure to different environmental conditions and can last for many years. In contrast, EPDM rubber is less durable than silicone rubber and tends to crack or become brittle when exposed to environmental stressors.

When it comes to selecting the right cold shrinkable tube for your application, it is important to consider environmental conditions, temperature resistance, and chemical resistance. Silicone rubber cold shrink tubing is a good choice for high-temperature applications, while EPDM cold shrink tubing is ideal for outdoor use. By understanding the differences between these two types of cold shrink tubing, you can ensure that you select the right product for your application.
