Key Details about Semi-Conductive Tape

2023-05-09
Semi-conductive tape is made of materials that have moderate electrical conductivity, typically polymers filled with carbon black. They have higher resistance than metals, but lower resistance than insulators. This gives them some conductive properties, but limits current flow.

The Semi-conductive tape typically contain a polymer like silicone, acrylic or fluoropolymer along with conductive carbon black particles which create pathways for electrons to flow across the material. The amount of carbon black added determines the level of conductivity. Semi-conductive tapes are rated based on volume resistivity, typically in the range of 10^3 to 10^8 ohm-meters. This means they conduct some electricity, but at a limited, controlled rate. They are partially conductive rather than highly conductive or non-conductive.

Semi-conductive tape are commonly used for applications like static elimination, grounding, electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, and applications where limited current flow is useful. They can slowly dissipate electric charges to avoid buildup. Some examples of uses include:

- Wrapping and grounding coaxial or triaxial cables  to remove static charges

- Attaching electronic components to grounded surfaces for ESD protection

- Containing or controlling small electrical charges over a surface due to friction

- Connecting conductive fabrics or composite materials with limited conductivity

- Attaching carbon fibers components or casings to provide dissipative draining of electrical energy

The Semi-conductive tape Benefits include customizing conductivity levels, easy application to surfaces that require controlled electrical flow, and versatility for uses where both conductive and non-conductive properties are important.  Drawbacks include less flexibility and higher cost than non-conductive tapes. Limited shrinkage ability since high heat can damage the semi-conductive properties. Typically lower adhesion than other tapes.
